Member of the European Parliament, representing Thuringia, his region in Germany. He is a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and of the Delegation for the Relations with India. Born in 1970, he was educated in Germany, the UK and France, graduating with degrees in physics and economics. Also, he did his social service in Poland instead of military service. After holding a number of research positions and briefly working for a venture capital fund, he joined the Federal Economics Ministry in Berlin as private secretary to a junior minister. 2002-2005 he worked for the World Bank in Washington DC, including as country economist for Tajikistan. 2005-2010, he was a resident fellow at Bruegel in Brussels. In 2010 he was appointed head of department at the Thuringian Ministry for Economic Affairs where he worked until he was elected to the European Parliament for the social democrats.
